Taking a cue from the Pogue’s mix of traditional Celtic music and punk ferocity, Flogging Molly put their own spin on that frequently off-the-hinges sound by incorporating heavier guitar elements – elements that Irish frontman Dave King no doubt took from his tenure as lead vocalist for ‘80s speed-metalers Fastway. The fourth and latest Flogging album, Float, doesn’t deviate from that formula – there are plenty of rousing, pint-hoisting rockers like “You Won’t Make A Fool Out Of Me,” “Lightning Storm” and “Punch Drunk Grinning Soul” that are sure to electrify live audiences, as well as the requisite tender ballad (in this case the sweeping, sing-along closer “The Story So Far”)
It would be easy to dismiss Float, as the band really aren’t bringing anything new to the table. But who needs experimentation or evolution when one can craft impeccable, fist-pumping anthems in their comfort zone? As King sings in the title track, “No, don’t sink the boat / that you build to keep afloat.” – JT
