AMP MAGAZINE In the Studio Nathen Maxwell of Flogging Mollyview image

So, you guys are in the studio for your new album! I heard you guys had done some pre-production in Ireland! Had you done this on either of the two previous records? How did this turn out?
This is our first time writing and recording in Ireland. It is going great and we are having a good time as well! Dave and Bridget live over here now so we decided what the hell lets do this one in Ireland.
Where are you going to do the actual recording, and with whom producing it?
We are currently in Grouse Lodge recording the album with Engineer/producer Ryan Hewitt. The studio is in the beautiful countryside in West Meath Co.
Have you worked with this producer before? How did you get hooked up with them? Who else have they produced that you really liked the sound of their record?
This is the first time working with Ryan. It turns out that he is a fan of the band, and when we started putting the feelers out there he found out and was very enthusiastic about the project. We talked several times on the phone and then decided that he was the right guy for the job. He has recently won an award for his work on the last Red Hot Chili Peppers album.
So, Matt Hensley is back in the band. What exactly went down with him leaving?
Matt was having a hard time about the intense touring schedule, and all the time away from his family. When it was all said and done, he realized that being in Flogging Molly was very much a part of him. He also realized that by following his dreams he was being a great role model for his son.
Were you writing this record thinking he wasn’t going to be a part of it? Were you guys still in contact through his hiatus?
Flogging Molly is a family, and Matt is our brother. We always stayed in good contact. We did not know that Matt would come to his senses! But we are all very grateful that the family is whole again. We tried out a couple of other cats who were good but, when the word came that Matt was regretting his decision and wanted back in the fold, it was a no brainer.
How is the new record sounding? Does it have and overall different feel than previous records?
Our music is very organic. We don’t pre-conceive the music. So it is just a natural evolution in our sound. It is the best album we have ever done so far!
How do you think the kids will react to the new album, right off the bat?
One thing I know is that you are always going to have the people who love your first album better than anything else you do, no matter what, or those who will always think Drunken Lullabies is out best. I can’t really be bothered by thinking about that. All I care is that I am playing the best music that I can at the time.
When do you expect it to drop, and are their any working names yet?
The new album will be out in Feb. of 08. We are currently bouncing around several potential titles.
Any last words?
How about another round?! Cheers!
